Round-table meeting March 2019

Round-table meeting 18 March 2019

Dear CNAP member,

Please be invited to the next CNAP Round Table Meeting on March 18, 2019 at 12:00 - 16:00, in room FRB 7D/2.106.

In this round table meeting, the presentations and discussions of papers will be followed by a group discussion on Optimal working conditions for transformative discoveries. The Danish National Research Foundation (DNRF) has asked us to provide them with input regarding the creation of an environment where novel ideas thrive, and hypotheses are proven or disproven. “From the DNRF’s experience it takes different competencies, sharp brains that can think out of the box, up-to-date equipment, an international hub, freedom to pursue novel ideas, driven by accountable scientific leaders, enthusiastic students eager to make a career in science, and much more.” So what are your thoughts on what the key drivers behind great scientific discoveries are in our field of research? As input to the discussion, please read the short piece “Reflections from a Nobel winner: Scientists need time to make discoveries” that you may find here: https://bit.ly/2RWYFOo

You have been divided into groups (please find the groups below) and each group is kindly asked to arrange a short meeting (approx. half an hour) before the round table meeting. At this short meeting, the groups’ task will be to pick a Science or Nature paper that is strongly related to pain and neuroplasticity. The paper should not be more than 10 years old. Please send your chosen paper to Lone (lsar@hst.aau.dk) by February 28, 2019.

Programme

12.00 Group work – preparation of two-slide-presentations (20 min. incl. discussion) plus discussions

  1. A presentation of the chosen paper. Please prepare two presentation slides:
    - One slide about the paper: Present the general concept and the process of the paper (structure, methods, why is this paper good enough to end up in Nature/Science etc.)
    - One slide about your experiences when you were looking for the paper: What are the differences between a Nature/Science paper and a “normal” paper, what sort of pain relevant papers are published in these journals, what would it take for a CNAP paper to be accepted there etc.
  2. A discussion of the paper selected by one of the other groups
  3. A discussion on Optimal working conditions for transformative discoveries

13.30 Presentations by the groups:

  1.  Group 4: Rocco Giordano, Asghar Zarei, Dennis Boye Larsen, Juan Manuel Völker, Megan McPhee, Taha Janjua: Engineer et al 2011: Reversing pathological neural activity using targeted plasticity (Will be prepared for discussion by group 3)
  2. Group 3: Line Bay Sørensen, Federico Arguissain, Morten Høgh, Maria Galve Villa, Marco Rizzo, Lea Tøttrup Jørgensen: Tan et al 2017: A pathway from midcingulate cortex to posterior insula gates nociceptive hypersensitivity (Will be prepared for discussion by group 2). Because this paper is rather difficult to read, the group has also chosen a background paper to be read first: Nevian et al 2017: The cingulate cortex: divided in pain (background paper)
  3. Group 2: Ana Maria Zamorano-Andrés, Sebastian Kold, Luisina Gregoret, Aida Hejlskov Poulsen, Gabriela A. Diaz Valencia, Jeppe Nørgaard Poulsen: Woo et al 2016: Quantifying cerebral contributions to pain beyond nociception (Will be prepared for discussion by group 1)
  4. Group 1: Mauricio Henrich, Line E. Lykholt, Rosa Hugosdottir, Jenny Tigerholm, Daniele Riccio, Maria Carla Gerra: Jutzeler et al 2016: Association of pain and CNS structural changes after spinal cord injury (Will be prepared for discussion by group 4)

15.00 Discussion on Optimal working conditions for transformative discoveries

15.30 Fastelavnsboller

16.00 Thank you for today!

We expect you to familiarize yourselves with the papers that will be presented, but apart from your own paper and the paper that your group has been asked specifically to prepare to discuss, you are not expected to have read all the papers in detail.

We look forward to an educational and inspiring round table meeting.

Kind regards
CNAP round table committee (Laura, Shellie, Carsten, Kristian, and Thomas)
