These guidelines concern Ph.D. studies that are fully financed by the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine (internal Ph.D. students) or by external funds (external Ph.D. students). In cases where the Ph.D. study is not fully funded, the conditions must be individually agreed between the Ph.D. student and the supervisor.
Salary
The salary is regulated according to the agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and the Ministry of Finance.
Other Costs
These costs are covered through the so called "taxametertilskud", which is part of the grant for a Ph.D. position, and amounts to 152.000 DKR per year (2012).
Approx. 12.000 DKR per year is paid to the Faculties and the Department to cover costs for e.g. supervision, general and programme courses, technical and administrative service, office and laboratory costs, and costs related to the Ph.D. defence.
5.000 DKR per year is allocated for print of the Ph.D. thesis.
15.000 DKR per year is allocated as an allowance ("rådighedsbeløb") to the Ph.D. student.
The "Rådighedsbeløb"
The full "rådighedsbeløb" for three years, amounting to 45.000 DKR, is supposed to cover all other costs related to the Ph.D. project, e.g. participation in conferences and purchase of books, materials and equipment.
All costs in excess of 2.000 DKR for a single purchase of services or commodities must be approved by the Ph.D. student’s supervisor. Aalborg University’s general rules for ordering services and commodities must be observed in all cases, see special guidelines.
Budget
It is strongly recommended that the Ph.D. student and the supervisor make a budget for the "rådighedsbeløb" no later than at the time when costs are to be paid for the first time.
Especially, there should be a clear agreement between the Ph.D. student and the supervisor if some type of costs will be covered from other sources than the "rådighedsbeløb". Experience shows that e.g. the costs related to performing experiments, e.g. paying subjects and travel to laboratories outside Aalborg, can be quite substantial.
